FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID

Financial Aid is available to U.S. citizens and eligible noncitizens. Federal Financial Aid includes programs offered through the Department of Education. The major Student Financial Assistance (SFA) Programs are:

  • Federal Pell Grants
  • Stafford Loans
  • PLUS Loans (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students)
  • Graduate PLUS Loans
  • Consolidation Loans
  • (FSEOG) Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
  • Federal Work Study (Jobs)
  • Federal Perkins Loans
Definitions:
  • Grants are financial aid you don't have to pay back.
  • Work-Study Aid allows you to work and earn money to help pay for school.
  • Loans are money you borrow that you must repay with interest.

HOW TO APPLY

Applying for federal student aid is easy. You only have to fill out a simple form. You can even apply before you have been accepted at a college or university.

To receive Financial Aid you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The FAFSA should be completed online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. In 2005, more than 96% of all FAFSA applications were completed online. You may also call 1-800-FED-AID or call IFSB at 1-800-733-0473.

You will need a valid Social Security Number to apply. If you are dependent, you have to report both you and your parents' financial information on the FAFSA. This information will be considered when your eligibility is determined. Therefore, it is a great idea to have a completed income tax return available. After your completed application is received and processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). The SAR will report the information from your application such as your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), the number used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid. The formula takes into account your family's income, certain assets, necessary living expenses, and employment-related expenses. The results will be sent to you and to the schools that you list on your application.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

Scholarships and Grants are examples of "free money" that does not need to be repaid. Scholarships may be given to students who have potential in athletics, academics, music, and other areas. Scholarships also are given to students in other areas such as gender, religion, occupation, or aspirations. We at Independence Federal Savings Bank suggest that you start early and consider free search sites such as Fastweb.com or Scholarships.com to help you locate scholarships that may be available to you. Grants are another type of free money that do not need to be repaid. Grants can be received from the federal government, state government, local government, your school or private organizations.
